Abstract

Madrasah Tsanawiyah 1 Negeri (MTsN 1) Ponorogo has great attention in teaching Arabic. Therefore, all students are required to learn Arabic, from first grade to third, as well as Arabic teachers as much as possible must use Arabic in teaching. However, from the results of researcher’s observations in teaching Arabic subjects were found using the lecture method which was less attractive to students, especially second grade "B" students in this school. From this, the student's focus fails to understand the subject matter of the teacher, and causes in the inability of students to answer questions during the exam. Therefore, in this article the researcher wants to reveal the application of the audio-lingual method in improving students' speaking skills (maharatul kalam) to increase student activity and learning outcomes in learning maharatul kalam in Arabic subjects. This research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR), which consists of four stages of implementation, namely the preparation or planning of learning, the learning process, observation, and reflection. To collect data, researcher used four methods, namely: interviews, observation, written documents, and tests. After the researcher conducted the research it was found that the activity of students on speaking skills in class two "B" in the first cycle obtained an average value of 23.70, and the average value of student learning outcomes was obtained 66.85. Whereas for the second cycle, the students' activities got an average score of 26.11 and the average score of the students was 77.96. From these data, it can be seen that the application of the audio-lingual method can improve learning activities and student learning outcomes of Maharatul Kalam students in Arabic for academic year 2018-2019.
